Medical Family Therapy

We believe in caring for the psychological and physical needs of a person concurrently. Receiving a serious medical diagnosis, experiencing physical trauma or developing chronic pain can be life changing. Medical terminology is rarely easy to understand, and navigating the complexities of the healthcare system can be intimidating and overwhelming.

In many cases, patients are left feeling vulnerable and powerless.

Our goal is to draw from the medical family therapy model to help you through the course of your physical illness, while addressing your emotional, spiritual and relational needs through the lens of Emotionally Focused Therapy.  Because several of our therapists have first-hand experience working in hospitals, we have a unique perspective through which we can relate to you as our medical client and all you are experiencing with your medical condition and treatment.

As Systems-trained family therapists, we believe when one member of a family is sick or injured, the lives of those around them are also affected. Treating the emotional and physical needs of those who love and care for the patient can provide an opportunity for healing and understanding to occur, often resulting in a new outlook for everyone.

Adjusting to your health condition, in particular chronic pain and chronic illness, can be incredibly difficult and painful. It often requires grieving the life you once had in order to embrace a ‘new normal’. We will provide a safe place to explore the impact of your diagnosis on you and on your relationships so that you can begin to define the ‘new normal’ you desire. If you or someone you know is dealing with a medical issue that is affecting your lives, please reach out to us so we can help you and your family deal with this difficult time.
