What is EFT? What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)? It is a form of therapy developed by Dr. Sue Johnson that is focused on helping couples and relationships of all types to improve their emotional bond and build stronger, more fulfilling connections. EFT for couples is based on the idea that emotional connection is at the heart of healthy relationships and that when partners and couples can connect emotionally, they are better able to resolve conflicts and support each other through life's challenges.

At the core of EFT is the belief that we are all wired for emotional connection. From the time we are born, we seek out emotional connection with others, and this need for connection continues throughout our lives. However, when we experience stress, trauma, or other challenges, our ability to connect emotionally can become compromised. This can lead to feelings of isolation, disconnection, and even depression and anxiety.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) works by helping couples to identify and express their emotions in a safe and supportive environment. By working with a trained EFT therapist, couples and partners can gain a deeper understanding of their own emotions and how they impact their relationship. They can also learn how to communicate their emotions effectively with their partner and develop new ways of relating to each other that are more supportive, loving, and fulfilling.

One of the key components of EFT for couples is the emphasis on creating a secure attachment between partners. A secure attachment is a state in which both partners feel emotionally safe and supported by each other. This allows them to be vulnerable, express their emotions openly, and trust that their partner will be there for them through thick and thin.

Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples has been shown to be effective in helping them improve their emotional bond and build stronger relationships. Research has shown that couples who undergo EFT are more likely to report long term and lasting improvements in their relationship satisfaction, communication, and emotional connection.

If you are struggling in your relationship, EFT may be able to help. By working with a trained EFT therapist, you can gain the tools and strategies you need to build a stronger, more fulfilling relationship with your partner.
